Half way through week two at HHI secondary in Blantyre. Learners are the happiest, most kind and caring young people you could meet. They are enthusiastic, energetic and keen to learn. They love active learning and participate 100% every time - amazing!
This week we have shared the following learning and teaching techniques with our Malawi colleagues:
Think, pair, share
No hands up
Learning through drama
Constructive feedback
Getting quiet by using 'clap once if you hear me, ...'
Building relationships by taking interest in learners' lives
Displaying Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
Pick a friend to help you
Effective group work
Thumbs up/down to show understanding
Using home made, simple visuals, to enhance learning
Tomorrow we will deliver a teacher CPD course entitled 'What makes a good lesson'
We also visited HHI Primary school and met the very friendly DHT who gave us a tour of the school. We are visiting again and will have a chat about introducing primary/secondary transition to motivate learners and increase staying on rates - will be an interesting discussion.
