This was our last full week at Mpata, and what a wonderful week it has been!
On Monday afternoon we spent time with the Parent Literacy group who attend weekly English lessons at Mpata, delivered by the headteacher, Bullah, and his fabulous Standard 1 teachers.
Not only does this allow parents to develop their own literacy skills, but also enables them to support their children's learning at home. We enjoyed interacting with the parent group - playing games, chatting, and of course, singing and dancing.
On Tuesday, we facilitated a second CPD session for all staff members on an active approach to phonics, teaching literacy skills through drama, and utilising sports leaders to support physical activity across the school. Again, the CPD session was well received by all staff, it gave another opportunity to share ideas with our Malawian colleagues, and to work collaboratively to improve learners experiences.
It was during the CPD that the Mpata staff gave us our new Malawian names. Naomi, Standard 1 teacher, led a short naming ceremony. Claire, is now Chimemwe meaning laughter, Lesley is Chikondi meaning love, and Lauren is Chisomo, meaning grace. We have been referred to our new names since, and we love them!
The sports leaders have continued to work with Lauren to learn games without the use of equipment. This week they have had the chance to put their training into practice, leading full classes by dividing them in to in small groups with 2 leaders at each to make large numbers more manageable. Highlights have been around 240 Standard 3 learners all taking part in activities on the pitch on Monday!
They have also been developing skills with equipment, highlights being parachute games and netball skills. The sports leaders are really working hard to develop their skills and are growing in confidence every day.
To top off a fabulous week, we held an Open Day to which the whole community were invited. This was an opportunity to showcase the wonderful work that goes on at Mpata through a display of dance, drama, music and song. Our Standard 5 and 6 drama group performed a short play which told the MLOL story. We also had some sporting performances, as well as dancing from the parents and teachers.
We were delighted that head teachers and learners from neighbouring schools were also able to attend, and join in with the fun. The event was also attended by Primary Education Advisor, Mercy, who was very impressed with the children's performances, and even got up for a few dances herself!
To celebrate, we had a staff party which involved lots of food, dancing, and party games! We were completely overwhelmed with the gifts we received, 3 beautiful Malawian dresses. We can't wait to wear them!
Our time at Mpata has gone so fast, we only have one day remaining, it will most definitely be an emotional one!! The ethos, atmosphere and sense of community at Mpata is incredible, despite the challenges faced in terms of infrastructure, resources, and an ever increasing roll, there is so much positivity, enthusiasm, and passion for learning.
We feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to work at this amazing school. Going to work has never been so much fun! It has exceeded all of our expectations, and it is safe to say, Mpata will forever remain in our hearts. A massive thanks to Bullah, Dorothy and all of the Mpata staff and community for this experience. Also a big shout out to Justin who has driven us as far up the mountain as he could every day, given us top banter and lots of laughs. He is a core member of #teammpata
