Day 2 at Michiru. Marie and I met with the management team on arrival. The Headteacher is unwell so Collins amd Catherine the DHT are working together running the school.
Classrooms for Malawi built the classrooms the school have 2 years ago. Before this all 1300 children and 23 teachers were outside.
The heat is stifling by 11am so this has made a huge difference to all. Unfortunately there are still some classes outside due to the high numbers of pupils.
We were given a tour of the school and classes and made to feel very welcome. We also saw some interesting sights in the 'playground'.
The school are lucky enough to have a water pump which is used by the community. Once I got to class Collins was teaching agriculture. He was happy for me to chip in and before I knew it I had the class up demonstrating grading & transportation!
It was great to be involved with the learners. I was then invited to the staff meeting to introduce myself.
The teachers were very interested in the Scottish Education system where all children move stage together and how we assess without entrance exams.
The setting was certainly different to the average staffroom.
I am trying very hard to talk slowly!!
Tomorrow I will be teaching fact and opinion with Clemisia. We discussed the lesson today and the things we are going to try.
I am looking forward to using some AfL strategies with the class.
We wandered down to the 'town' for a Coke and a look around and now back planning for tomorrow's lessons.
