Monday 3rd October

Return to the chalk face after two years in retirement what a shock to the system to walk into a room of over two hundred learners sitting on the floor with only a few feet between their feet and the board.  Relearning to write with chalk on a poor surface while trying not to stand on one of the pupils.

Today I had to introduce "long division" to standard 6 pupils. When was the last time we divided 7 figured numbers by 3 figured numbers, the old fashioned way without calculators? It took me back to the days in my own secondary doing a page of working to find the answer but I had to remind myself these were "primary" pupils.

At the end of the period (a mere 35 mins) I felt my age and must have looked older.

On Friday as standard 6A/B were carrying out some assessments I watched standard 7pupils doing some maths. This would challenge many graduates to answer the questions without the use of a calculator and out door learning takes on a new meaning. Nevertheless I can't wait for tomorrow and meeting the pupils for a new learning experience. Science teacher teaches English!!!!!!!!! Eek.
