Wednesday 5th October

My first full day at Nayizi saw big discussions taking place, among other things, about their library. The area used is carefully tended by Judith the librarian who is also a Standard 6 teacher.

However the room is quite small and already divided in two. Many old books and other resources are stored behind a partition.

When I shared my vision of how it might look and be used there was genuine excitement. The Head Teacher agreed to my proposals and Judith and I set off to recruit class librarians while he spoke to Department Heads about removing books.

We plan to send very old books home with learners. They can use them to practise reading. If not, other uses can be found for them.

I even suggested to learners that they could take some home to give to their "gogos" (grandparents) which made them smile!

They may end up as fuel for cooking but I think that's better than sitting on shelves being eaten by insects.
