Today marked the first day of our leadership training in Nankumba, a rural community near Blantyre in Malawi.

Before starting our session, I was able to observe a class, meeting the wonderful young people and their teacher. This set the tone for a great first day working with senior leaders to improve teaching and learning with a focus on numeracy.

We engaged in rich conversation focusing on effective questioning, modelling, use of concrete materials, and opportunities for practice. There was also honest dialogue about the realities schools face in Malawi such as large class sizes, limited resources, and competing priorities. Yet what stood out most was the determination in the room and leaders leaned into solutions discussing how they can drive forward positive change in their schools.

Day one in Nankumba has been inspiring. There is strong leadership here and appetite for change.

Tomorrow we are in Limbe, an urban town near Blantyre.
