N'Gumbe Primary School - follow up visit from last year.
I arrived to a warm welcome from the Sports Mistress Rhoda and the Sports Leaders. It was great to be back at the school and to see everyone again.
There were a few SL's missing from last year but I was delighted to see that Rhoda had added 11 new SL's to the group. They will be assisting the present SL's who will teach them the knowledge and understanding they have acquired of all the games and activities.
After a discussion with all the SL's and a few ice breaker games I showed them some videos and photos from last years activities at N'Gumbe on my laptop. This went down a treat as they loved seeing themselves in action and what they had achieved. It was also inspirational for the new leaders as they could see what they will be a part of.
Rhoda and myself took the SL's outside so I could show them some new games with the new equipment I had brought them. We went through some Touch Rugby games using the 2 rugby balls and also some warm up rugby games.
A standard 5 class came out and the SL's were split into 3 groups with each group taking about 25 learners. It was great to see the SL's in action and to see them taking on board what they had learned that morning. It was very evident to see that the SL's from last year had benefited greatly from all the training they had received and their continuous involvement in sporting activities with their sports mistress Rhoda.
We went back to the classroom where we chatted about the session and the SL's had an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback about the session.
Rhoda explained further about the sporting activities running in the school and her hopes for the year ahead. Handball, Netball, Football, Volleyball, Athletics and now Rugby are just some of the activities that will be taking place. Rhoda took me around the school and showed me where each activity will take place. She even showed me a long jump pit which she and some pupils had dug out themselves and put sand in. Incredible resourcefulness and willingness to make things happen.
At the end of the session I presented the school with 2 Rugby balls, 2 handballs, a pump and also some football shirts kindly donated by the Head of PE at Smithycroft Secondary. I also presented Rhoda with a Malawi Leaders of Learning Hoodie which she was delighted to receive.
It has been a great visit and so pleasing to see that what we implemented last year has been taken on by the school and valued. My hope is that all the SL's will play an instrumental part in sport and physical activity at N'Gumbe, supporting and assisting the sports mistress where possible. Zikomo Kwambiri N'Gumbe!
