Tom McDonald, Former Headteacher & MLOL Leadership Training

Day 3 of head teacher leadership training today. Started with a power cut , all too common here in Malawi. GBC found me a generator which promptly ran out of fuel.

Anyway , the day was brilliant.

These head teachers lead schools with class sizes of 100+ and many pupils out in the open air. They are highly motivated to make a difference and their discussions and feedback were of the highest order. As assignments they will tackle tough issues , such as literacy and absenteeism driven by sheer poverty.

I was so impressed by all of them - they could lead schools anywhere !

I made use of Dorica , head teacher at Ngumbe to talk about advanced learning and teaching in her school. Part of her presentation involved all of us dancing together - brilliant. The deputy at Namwiyo , Patrick , also came along to talk about library use and set up. Really impressive too. I am so encouraged by the attitudes and determination of these leaders to tackle poverty through the power of education.

They love the leadership training experience and I can't wait to meet up with them again in June.

Meanwhile, Carol and Sharon were at Chitsime carrying out monitoring and evaluation. It is a highly congested township school with around 7,000 children and class sizes up to 300.

The teachers do an incredible job. Carol was moved to tears though when she saw a queue of children at lunchtime patiently waiting to go into the library, built by Holyrood. Things are improving even if it's only a little bit at a time.

The power of education is incredible.
