Our first day in a new place
This morning we woke up early and went to a Malawian Catholic Church. Everyone was dressed up and wore their best clothes. The minister said lots of prayers and there was a church that sang hymns. At the end of the service Morgan, Audrey and Stevie went up to the minister and he gave them a small piece of holy bread to eat.
Then in the afternoon we went to William village to visit the main school of the village. The bus journey was about an hour long and the roads were so bumpy...can't complain about potholes back home anymore!
When we arrived at the village there were a few children that started chasing the car, we had never seen anything like it before and were all feeling a bit overwhelmed. There was one little boy who ran after the car for ages and it was amazing to see. I don't know why but I started crying even before we met everyone of the village as I was so overwhelmed and everything I was experiencing was new... Stevie wasn't slow to take the mick!
The people of the village and the school were patiently waiting on us getting out of the van and when we got out so many children crowded around us. We all found it a bit intimidating and scary as we had never been surrounded by so many young children before. However, meeting so many children was amazing and I loved how we could communicate without using many words.
The older children got up in front of everyone and showed us a traditional Malawian dance that they practice in the playground. It was really cool and we were all really interested to see what the kids do in their break times.
The day was amazing and I think everyone really enjoyed experiencing our first day and it was exciting to see how many people in Malawi live their daily lives.
